Ezekiel is told, “Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel,” so he opens his mouth, and He causes him to eat that roll, saying to him, “Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee,” so he eats it, and it was in his mouth as “honey,” “devash” in Hebrew, for sweetness.
Ezekiel is told to go, get him to the house of Israel, and speak with His words to them, since he is not sent to a people of a strange speech and of a hard language, but to the house of Israel, who will not hearken to him, for they will not hearken to Him, since all the house of Israel are impudent and hardhearted, but He has made his face strong against their faces, and his forehead strong against their foreheads, as an adamant harder than flint He has made his forehead, urging him not to fear them, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.
Ezekiel is then lifted up by the spirit, and taken to the captives at Telabib, who dwell by the river of Chebar, and he sits there astonished among them seven days, after which the word of the Lord comes to him, appointing him a watchman to the house of Israel, so that whenever he hears a word from His mouth, he must warn them from Him, describing how if he does not warn the wicked, and he dies in his iniquity, his blood will be required at Ezekiel’s hand, but if he warns the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, he shall die in his iniquity, but Ezekiel will have delivered his own soul, closing with a description of Ezekiel being made dumb, unable to reprove them, until such time as God opens his mouth again.
Ezekiel’s remarkable act of eating the scroll, finding it sweet as honey despite its difficult message of lament and woe, illustrates how genuinely internalizing God’s word, however challenging its content, can still bring authentic spiritual nourishment and even sweetness. His appointment as a watchman, personally accountable for warning others, establishes the genuine, weighty responsibility that accompanies receiving and faithfully proclaiming God’s word to others.
