Ezekiel records the word coming to him in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, instructing him to write the name of this day, this very day, since the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this very day, telling him to speak a parable to the rebellious house, describing setting on a “pot,” “sir” in Hebrew, setting it on, and also pouring water into it, gathering the pieces into it, every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder, filling it with the choice bones. Ezekiel describes this pot representing the bloody city, whose scum is in it, whose scum has not gone out of it, bringing it out piece by piece, no lot falling upon it, since her blood is in the midst of her, she set it upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered, describing how because of the filthiness she has left, He has set her in filthiness also, and she shall not be purged, till He has caused His fury to rest upon her, closing this parable with the pot being set empty upon the coals, that its brass may be hot, and burn, and its filthiness may be molten in it, that its scum may be consumed. Ezekiel describes the devastating personal cost of this ministry, God telling him He will take away from him with a stroke the desire of his eyes, yet he shall not mourn nor weep, neither shall his tears run down, so he speaks to the people in the morning, and at evening his wife dies, and the next morning he does as he was commanded, the people asking why he does not mourn, and he answers that this happened as a sign to them, that they should do as he has done, they shall not mourn nor weep, but they shall pine away for their iniquities, and mourn one toward another, closing with a promise that in that day one who has escaped shall come to him, to cause him to hear it with his ears, and his mouth shall be opened to him who has escaped, and he shall speak, and be no more dumb, and he shall be a sign to them, this remarkable, deeply personal chapter demonstrating the genuine, costly sacrifice Ezekiel’s own prophetic ministry required, even including his own profound personal grief.
Ezekiel’s shocking personal loss, his own wife dying suddenly with instructions not to publicly mourn, demonstrates prophetic ministry’s genuine, extraordinary cost, requiring even his most intimate personal grief to become part of the message itself. This chapter’s boiling pot imagery, filthiness that will not be purged until fully burned away, illustrates judgment’s genuine thoroughness, necessary precisely because lesser measures had already repeatedly failed to produce genuine change.
