Ezekiel describes the voice saying to him, “Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee,” and the spirit entered into him when He spoke to him, and set him upon his feet, so that he heard Him who spoke to him, describing how He said, “Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a “rebellious,” “moreh” in Hebrew, nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day.”
Ezekiel is told these children are impudent and stiffhearted, and he is sent to them, and shall say to them, “Thus saith the Lord GOD,” and whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, since they are a rebellious house, yet they shall know that there has been a prophet among them, urging him not to be afraid of them, nor of their words, though briers and thorns be with him, and he dwells among scorpions, not to be afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.
Ezekiel is instructed to speak God’s words to them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, for they are most rebellious, being told to open his mouth, and eat that which He gives him, describing a hand being sent to him, and there was a roll of a book in it, spread before him, written within and without, and there was written on it lamentations, and mourning, and woe, this striking symbolic instruction setting the stage for the next chapter’s remarkable, tangible enactment of receiving and internalizing God’s difficult message.
God’s repeated designation of Ezekiel as son of man, used throughout this entire book, emphasizes his genuine humanity even while receiving such extraordinary revelation, grounding the prophetic message in ordinary human vulnerability rather than superhuman status. His commission to speak regardless of whether the people listen reveals that faithful obedience means proclaiming truth consistently, with success measured by faithfulness rather than merely by immediate, visible results.
