EZEKIEL 15 ‐ “The Useless Vine”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Pin” it comes from the Hebrew Word “yathed” which means “pin, peg.”

Ezekiel compares Jerusalem to a worthless vine, useful for nothing but burning. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ezekiel 15.

Ezekiel is asked what advantage the wood of the vine has more than any other tree, or than a branch which is among the trees of the forest, asking whether wood is taken from it to do any work, or whether men take a “pin,” “yathed” in Hebrew, of it to hang any vessel on it, describing how it is cast into the fire for fuel, the fire devouring both its ends, and its midst being burned.

Ezekiel asks whether it is meet for any work when it was whole, how much less shall it be meet yet for any work, when the fire has devoured it, and it is burned, describing how thus says the Lord God, as the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which He has given to the fire for fuel, so will He give the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Ezekiel closes describing how He will set His face against them, they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them, and they shall know that He is the Lord, when He sets His face against them, making the land desolate, because they have committed a trespass, this brief but pointed parable using the vine’s natural uselessness for any purpose besides fruit-bearing to illustrate Jerusalem’s genuine worthlessness once it had stopped producing the righteousness God had genuinely intended and expected from it.

This brief parable’s central insight, that a vine’s wood serves no practical purpose whatsoever apart from bearing fruit, unlike sturdier trees valuable even as timber, illustrates Jerusalem’s genuine uselessness once she had stopped producing the righteousness God had always intended as her essential purpose. Its stark, simple logic reminds readers that identity and calling carry real responsibility, and failing to fulfill that purpose leaves nothing else of comparable, redeeming value remaining.
