Ezekiel describes certain elders of Israel coming to him, and sitting before him, and the word of the Lord coming to him, that these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face, asking whether He should be inquired of at all by them, urging that the house of Israel who separates himself from Him, and sets up his idols in his heart, and comes to a prophet, He the Lord will “answer,” “anah” in Hebrew, him according to the multitude of his idols. Ezekiel is instructed to tell the house of Israel to repent, and turn themselves from their idols, and turn away their faces from all their abominations, since every man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel, who separates himself from Him, and sets up his idols in his heart, and comes to a prophet to inquire of Him, He the Lord will answer him by Himself, and He will set His face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and He will cut him off from the midst of His people. Ezekiel delivers God’s sobering declaration, that though Noah, Daniel, and Job, these three men, were in a land, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, describing how if He causes noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it is desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts, though these three men were in it, as He lives, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate, this striking naming of three exceptionally righteous men emphasizing that judgment had become so severe and widespread that even the most extraordinary personal righteousness could no longer avert it for the nation as a whole, though it would still genuinely save the righteous individual himself.
God’s striking declaration, that even Noah, Daniel, and Job together could only save themselves rather than the nation, emphasizes how severe and comprehensive this judgment had genuinely become, beyond what even exceptional individual righteousness could avert for others. This chapter’s warning against idolatry set up in the heart reveals that genuine spiritual corruption operates internally first, external idol worship merely reflecting a deeper, more fundamental internal divided loyalty.
