Ezekiel is lifted up by the spirit, and brought to the east gate of the Lord’s house, where he sees twenty-five men, among whom he sees Jaazaniah and Pelatiah, princes of the people, and the Lord tells him these are the men who devise mischief, and give wicked “counsel,” “etsah” in Hebrew, in this city, who say it is not near, let them build houses, this city being the caldron, and they the flesh.
Ezekiel is instructed to prophesy against them, and while he prophesies, Pelatiah the son of Benaiah dies, causing Ezekiel to fall on his face, and cry out with a loud voice, asking whether the Lord will make a full end of the remnant of Israel, but the Lord responds that though He has caused them to go far off among the heathen, and though He has scattered them among the countries, yet He will be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come, promising to gather them from the peoples, and give them the land of Israel.
Ezekiel delivers a beautiful promise, “And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God,” describing how as for those whose heart walks after their detestable and abominable things, He will recompense their way upon their own heads, closing with Ezekiel being lifted up by the spirit, and brought in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to those of the captivity, the vision he had seen going up from him, and he telling the captives all the things the Lord had shown him.
God’s beautiful promise, a new heart and a new spirit, removing the heart of stone and giving a heart of flesh, offers genuine hope for internal transformation extending beyond mere external behavioral change to touch the very core of human nature. His tender description of being a little sanctuary for the scattered exiles reveals genuine, ongoing divine presence and care even amid displacement and loss, comfort not limited to any single geographic location.
