The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Difference” it comes from the Hebrew Word “palah” which means “to set apart, to make a distinction.”
Pharaoh begs for relief, promises to let Israel go, and then breaks his word almost immediately. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 8.
God sends a plague of frogs covering the entire land, filling houses, beds, ovens, and kneading troughs. Pharaoh’s magicians can reproduce this too, but only Moses can remove it. Pharaoh, desperate, asks Moses to pray for the frogs to leave, and even lets Moses choose the timing, promising to release Israel in return. Moses prays, the frogs die, and the land stinks with their rotting bodies, but “when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart.”
Next, Aaron strikes the dust of the earth, and it becomes lice throughout the land. This time, the magicians try to reproduce it and fail completely, admitting to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” Even this admission does not move Pharaoh’s hardened heart. God then sends thick swarms of flies, but specifically spares the land of Goshen where Israel dwells, so that Pharaoh will know that “I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.” The Hebrew word for this distinction, setting Israel apart from Egypt, is “palah,” meaning to make a clear difference.
Overwhelmed by the flies, Pharaoh again offers a compromise, then a full release, promising to let the people go if Moses will only pray for the plague to stop. Moses does, but “Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.”
Pharaoh’s pattern here is telling. He makes promises the moment pressure is high, and breaks them the instant relief comes. Real repentance requires more than temporary desperation. It requires a genuinely changed heart, something Pharaoh proves again and again he is simply unwilling to offer.
