The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Taskmasters” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nogesh” which means “oppressor, one who drives to hard labor.”
Moses and Aaron finally speak to Pharaoh, and things immediately get worse, not better. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 5.
Moses and Aaron come before Pharaoh with a direct message from the Lord God of Israel. “Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.” Pharaoh responds with open contempt. “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.” Rather than releasing them, Pharaoh accuses the Israelites of being idle and increases their workload dramatically, ordering the taskmasters, “nogesh” in Hebrew, to stop supplying straw for bricks while still demanding the same daily quota.
The Israelite officers, beaten for failing to meet impossible quotas, cry out to Pharaoh, who dismisses them coldly, repeating that they are simply lazy. Leaving Pharaoh’s presence, these officers encounter Moses and Aaron and turn their anger on them instead. “The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh.”
Discouraged, Moses turns back to God with raw honesty. “Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? Why is it that thou hast sent me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.”
Obedience to God did not immediately fix Israel’s situation. It made things temporarily worse, and even Moses struggled to understand why. Sometimes following God’s direction leads through a harder season before deliverance comes, and honest, even frustrated, prayer is exactly the right response in that gap.
