EXODUS 4 ‐ “Moses Returns to Egypt”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Sign” it comes from the Hebrew Word “oth” which means “a sign, token, or proof.”

God gives Moses miraculous proof to carry back to a nation that has every reason to doubt him. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 4.

Moses worries that the Israelites will not believe he was truly sent by God, so the Lord gives him signs, “oth” in Hebrew, meaning a token or proof. His rod becomes a serpent and then returns to a rod. His hand becomes leprous and is then restored. If neither sign convinces them, water from the river will turn to blood on dry ground. Moses still hesitates, protesting that he is “slow of speech, and of a slow tongue,” but God reminds him who made the human mouth in the first place, and appoints Moses’ brother Aaron to speak on his behalf.

Moses returns to Egypt with his family, carrying “the rod of God” in his hand. Along the way, God tells Moses to warn Pharaoh that if he refuses to let Israel go, God will kill Pharaoh’s own firstborn son, since Israel is God’s firstborn. In a strange, tense episode at a lodging place, God threatens Moses himself until Zipporah quickly circumcises their son, showing how seriously obedience to God’s covenant sign is taken even for the deliverer’s own family.

Aaron meets Moses at the mountain of God, and together they gather the elders of Israel. Aaron speaks all the words God gave Moses and performs the signs before the people. The people believe, and when they hear that the Lord has seen their affliction, “they bowed their heads and worshipped.”

Moses came to God with a long list of reasons he was unqualified, and God answered every objection without ever removing the assignment itself. Instead, God provided exactly what Moses lacked, through signs, through Aaron’s voice, through His own presence. Feeling unprepared has never stopped God from sending someone anyway.
