The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Willing” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nadab” which means “to give willingly, freely.”
Moses gathers the people again, and this time, their hearts respond with remarkable generosity. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 35.
Moses assembles the entire congregation of Israel and repeats God’s instructions for the Sabbath, and then announces the offering needed to build the tabernacle, calling for gold, silver, brass, fine linens, dyed skins, acacia wood, oil, spices, and precious stones from anyone whose heart makes them willing to give. The Hebrew word for this voluntary giving is “nadab,” meaning to give freely and willingly, without compulsion. Moses also announces that Bezaleel and Aholiab have been specifically filled by God with wisdom and skill to lead the construction work and to teach others.
The response from the people is overwhelming. Everyone whose heart stirs them and whose spirit makes them willing brings their offerings, men and women alike, bringing gold jewelry, dyed materials, spun linen and goats’ hair, precious stones, spices, and oil, each contributing exactly what they have been moved to give. Rulers bring onyx stones and jewels for the ephod and breastplate, and those with wisdom spin the fine linen and goats’ hair themselves as an act of worship.
The chapter closes by highlighting Bezaleel and Aholiab again, filled with the spirit of God in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, gifted not only to design and craft the tabernacle’s furnishings themselves, but also to teach others the skills needed to complete this enormous, detailed project together as a community.
Nothing about this offering was forced or required by quota. It flowed entirely from hearts genuinely stirred and willing. When people give out of real gratitude rather than obligation, the resulting generosity, as this chapter shows, can be extraordinary, more than enough for the task at hand.
