The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Wisdom” it comes from the Hebrew Word “chokmah” which means “wisdom, skill.”
God fills two ordinary craftsmen with extraordinary ability to build His dwelling place. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 31.
God specifically appoints Bezaleel, from the tribe of Judah, and fills him “with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.” The Hebrew word for this skill is “chokmah,” meaning wisdom, here applied practically to craftsmanship rather than abstract knowledge. Bezaleel is gifted specifically to work in gold, silver, brass, cutting stones, and carving wood, everything necessary to construct the tabernacle and its furnishings exactly as God had described.
God also appoints Aholiab, from the tribe of Dan, to work alongside Bezaleel, and gives wisdom to other skilled workers as well, so that they can complete everything God has commanded, from the tabernacle itself down to the priestly garments and the holy anointing oil and incense. This detail matters, God’s own Spirit equips ordinary craftsmen for this sacred building project, not only prophets or priests.
God then repeats His command concerning the Sabbath one final time before Moses descends the mountain, calling it “a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever,” a perpetual covenant reminding Israel that it is the Lord who sanctifies them. Anyone who profanes the Sabbath is to be put to death, underscoring how seriously this weekly rhythm of rest matters to God. Having finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, God gives him two tables of testimony, stone tablets written with God’s own finger.
Bezaleel and Aholiab remind us that God’s calling is not limited to spiritual leaders alone. Skilled, practical craftsmanship, filled and directed by God’s own Spirit, was just as essential to building His dwelling place as any prophecy or priestly duty. Every genuine skill can become an act of worship in the right hands.
