God designs elaborate clothing for the men who will represent Israel before Him. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 28.
God calls Aaron and his sons to serve as priests, and instructs Moses to make holy garments for Aaron “for glory and for beauty,” using the Hebrew phrase “kabod v’tiphereth.” These garments include a richly woven ephod of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, with two onyx stones on the shoulders engraved with the names of Israel’s twelve tribes, so Aaron carries the whole nation symbolically before the Lord whenever he serves.
A breastplate of judgment is worn over the ephod, set with twelve precious stones, each engraved with the name of one tribe, worn directly over Aaron’s heart when he goes before the Lord. Inside this breastplate rest the Urim and the Thummim, used for determining God’s judgment on specific matters. A blue robe is worn beneath the ephod, hemmed with alternating gold bells and pomegranates, so that the sound of Aaron’s bells can be heard as he moves in and out of the holy place before the Lord, a sound that keeps him from dying in that sacred space.
A gold plate is fastened to Aaron’s turban, engraved with the words “HOLINESS TO THE LORD,” worn on his forehead so that he continually bears the guilt connected to Israel’s holy gifts before God. Detailed instructions follow for coats, girdles, and linen breeches for both Aaron and his sons, ensuring modesty and holiness whenever they approach the altar to minister.
Every detail of the priestly garments pointed toward the same responsibility, representing an entire nation before a holy God. Aaron literally carried Israel’s names over his heart and on his shoulders. It is a vivid picture of intercession, standing before God not just for oneself, but on behalf of others.
