God instructs Moses to build an altar of acacia wood overlaid with brass, square in shape, with horns projecting from each corner, and a grate of network positioned inside it for burning offerings. This altar, along with all its pots, shovels, basins, and instruments, is specifically for the burnt offerings that will be central to Israel’s worship. Detailed instructions follow for the court surrounding the tabernacle, marked off by fine linen hangings supported by bronze pillars and silver hooks, one hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide, with a woven screen serving as the gate at its entrance.
God commands the people to bring pure, beaten olive oil for the lamp, “that the lamp may burn always,” using the Hebrew word “tamid,” meaning continually or perpetually. Aaron and his sons are instructed to keep this lamp burning from evening until morning consistently before the Lord, a lasting statute for the generations of Israel to come.
This detailed section closes out the instructions for the tabernacle’s outer structure, the altar where sacrifices are made, the boundary that marks off holy space from the ordinary camp beyond it, and the perpetual light that never goes out.
