God designs a portable dwelling place that can travel wherever His people go. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 26.
God gives Moses exact instructions for building the tabernacle itself, “mishkan” in Hebrew, meaning dwelling place, from ten curtains of fine twined linen, blue, purple, and scarlet, embroidered with cherubim, joined together with clasps of gold. Additional curtains of goats’ hair are made as a covering over this inner layer, along with a further covering of ram skins dyed red, and an outer layer of badger skins for protection from the elements.
The structure itself rests on upright boards of acacia wood overlaid with gold, set into silver sockets, connected together with gold rings and wooden bars that run through them to hold the entire frame securely in place. God specifies a veil of fine linen, blue, purple, and scarlet, woven with cherubim, to be hung on gold hooks, dividing the tabernacle into two distinct spaces.
This veil separates the holy place from the most holy place, where the ark of the covenant will rest, with the mercy seat serving as the point of contact between God and His people. A simpler hanging is placed at the entrance to the tabernacle itself, made of the same rich materials but without the cherubim, marking the transition from the outer court into God’s dwelling place among His people.
The layered coverings and careful boundaries of the tabernacle communicated something important, that approaching a holy God requires proper structure and reverence, not casual assumption. Yet the entire design still centered on one clear purpose, giving God a real, tangible place to dwell in the middle of His people’s camp.
