God instructs Moses to take a willing offering from the people, gold, silver, brass, fine linens, spices, and precious stones, to build a sanctuary. “Let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.” The Hebrew word for sanctuary here is “miqdash,” meaning a holy, set-apart place. God gives extremely precise instructions for the ark of the covenant, an acacia wood chest overlaid with pure gold, with a mercy seat on top flanked by two golden cherubim facing each other with wings stretched upward.
God explains the ark’s purpose directly. “There I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims.” Detailed instructions follow for a table of acacia wood overlaid with gold, to hold showbread continually before the Lord, along with its dishes, spoons, and bowls, all made of pure gold.
God then describes a golden lampstand, a menorah hammered from a single piece of pure gold, with six branches extending from a central shaft, each decorated with almond-blossom cups, knops, and flowers, designed to give light continually in the sanctuary. Every detail, materials, dimensions, and design, comes directly from God’s own specification, with Moses instructed to make everything “after the pattern” shown to him on the mountain.
God did not leave the details of His dwelling place to human creativity or guesswork. Every measurement and material mattered, because this space was meant to reflect something real about who God is and how He chooses to meet with His people. Even small, careful details can carry deep spiritual meaning.
