God closes His book of laws with a promise that He Himself will go ahead of Israel into the promised land. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 23.
God commands Israel to pursue honest justice consistently, refusing false reports, refusing to follow a crowd toward evil, and refusing to favor either the poor or the powerful unfairly in judgment. Israel is instructed even to help an enemy’s struggling animal rather than ignore it out of personal grudge, showing that basic compassion must override personal conflict. God repeats the command not to oppress a stranger, “for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.”
God establishes a Sabbath rhythm not only for each week, but for the land itself, resting every seventh year so the poor and even wild animals can eat from whatever grows naturally. He commands three annual feasts, unleavened bread, harvest, and ingathering, when all Israel’s men are to appear before the Lord. God promises to send “an angel,” “malak” in Hebrew, meaning messenger, before Israel to guard them along the way and bring them into the place He has prepared, warning them to obey this messenger’s voice carefully, since God’s own name is in him.
God promises that if Israel serves Him faithfully, He will bless their bread and water, take sickness away from them, and give them a full lifespan. He promises to drive out the nations before them gradually, “little by little,” rather than all at once, so the land does not become desolate and overrun by wild beasts before Israel is numerous enough to fill it. God warns firmly against making any covenant with these nations or their gods, since it would become a dangerous snare to Israel.
God’s promise to drive out the nations little by little, rather than instantly, is a striking picture of how He often works. Complete victory sometimes comes gradually rather than all at once, paced specifically to what His people are actually ready to steward well at each stage of the journey.
