The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Manna” it comes from the Hebrew Word “man hu” which means “what is it?”
With no food left in the wilderness, Israel wakes up to something they’ve never seen before. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 16.
One month after leaving Egypt, the whole congregation of Israel arrives in the wilderness of Sin, and food supplies run out. The people murmur against Moses and Aaron, longing so intensely for Egypt’s “flesh pots” and bread that they claim it would have been better to die there than to starve in the wilderness. God responds by promising to “rain bread from heaven” for them, with a specific instruction, each person is to gather only enough for that day, testing whether they will walk in His law or not.
God also promises quail to eat in the evening. That evening, quail cover the camp, and the next morning, a small, round substance appears on the ground with the dew. When the Israelites see it, they ask each other, “Man hu,” meaning “What is it?” in Hebrew, which becomes the origin of the name manna. Moses explains it is the bread God has given them to eat, and instructs them to gather exactly one omer per person, no more and no less.
Those who try to keep manna overnight, against instruction, find it breeds worms and stinks, except before the Sabbath, when a double portion gathered the day before stays fresh, since none will fall on the Sabbath itself. Some who go out looking for manna on the Sabbath find none, and God rebukes their disobedience, establishing the Sabbath as a day of rest even in the wilderness. Israel eats manna for forty years, until they reach the border of Canaan.
God provided exactly enough manna each day, no more and no less, teaching Israel daily dependence rather than long-term stockpiling. Trusting God for today’s provision, instead of anxiously hoarding for tomorrow, was the actual lesson hidden inside this miraculous bread from heaven.
