EXODUS 15 ‐ “The Song of Moses”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Sing” it comes from the Hebrew Word “shir” which means “to sing, a song.”

On the far side of the sea, Israel breaks into song for the very first time in Scripture. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Exodus 15.

Moses and the children of Israel sing a triumphant song to the Lord, celebrating His victory over Pharaoh’s army. “The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation… The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.” The Hebrew word for this act of singing is “shir.” The song recounts how Pharaoh’s chariots and army were cast into the sea, and declares confidently that the surrounding nations will hear of it and tremble, since God is bringing His people toward His holy habitation. Miriam, Moses’ sister, leads the women in dancing and singing with timbrels in celebrated response.

From this high point of celebration, Israel travels three days into the wilderness of Shur without finding water, until they arrive at Marah, where the water is too bitter to drink. The people immediately murmur against Moses, asking what they are supposed to drink. Moses cries out to the Lord, who shows him a specific tree to cast into the water, and the water becomes sweet.

There, God establishes a statute and a test for the people, promising that if they diligently listen to His voice and keep His commandments, He will put none of the diseases on them that He brought on Egypt, declaring Himself “the LORD that healeth thee.” Israel then arrives at Elim, where they find twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees, and camps there beside the water.

Israel went from singing victoriously at the Red Sea to complaining bitterly just three days later at Marah. That whiplash is remarkably human. Even a fresh, powerful experience of God’s deliverance does not automatically prevent the next hardship from testing our trust all over again.
