The children of Israel are “fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty.” The Hebrew word for this growth is “parah,” meaning to be fruitful and increase. A new king arises in Egypt “which knew not Joseph,” and fearing the size and strength of this foreign population, he enslaves the Israelites, setting taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor, building the cities of Pithom and Raamses.
The more the Egyptians oppress them, the more the Israelites multiply, so Pharaoh orders the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill every baby boy at birth. But the midwives “feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them,” and God deals well with them for it. Frustrated, Pharaoh escalates his cruelty, commanding that every Hebrew son be cast into the river.
This chapter sets the stage for everything that follows, a nation growing under crushing oppression, and ordinary people, the midwives, choosing to fear God rather than a king. Their quiet courage becomes the first act of resistance in a story that will soon require someone far more prepared to stand against Pharaoh directly.
Before Moses ever appears, two midwives risk their lives simply by refusing to obey an unjust command. Their courage reminds us that faithfulness to God sometimes starts in small, unnoticed acts, long before anyone recognizes the larger story God is building around them.
