On that same day, King Ahasuerus gives Esther the house of Haman, and Mordecai comes before the king, since Esther has told him what he is to her, and the king takes off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gives it to Mordecai, whom Esther sets over Haman’s house. Esther falls again at the king’s feet, weeping and pleading with him to reverse the mischief of Haman and his devised plot against the Jews.
The king extends his golden sceptre, and Esther rises, asking that letters be written to reverse Haman’s decree, since how can she endure to see the evil that would come to her people. The king grants Esther and Mordecai authority to write as they please concerning the Jews in the king’s name, sealed with the king’s ring, since a decree sealed this way cannot be reversed, so scribes write new “letters,” “iggeret” in Hebrew, granting the Jews in every city the right to gather and defend themselves, to destroy, kill, and annihilate any who would attack them, their little ones and women, and to take the spoil of their enemies.
Mordecai goes out from the king’s presence in royal apparel of blue and white, with a great crown of gold and a garment of fine linen and purple, and the city of Shushan rejoices and is glad. The Jews have light, gladness, joy, and honor in every province and city wherever the king’s command and decree arrive, with feasting and a good day, and many people throughout the land become Jews themselves, since the fear of the Jews falls upon them, a remarkable, joyful reversal from the despair that had gripped the community just chapters earlier.
The new decree’s clever solution, since the original edict could not be revoked, granting the Jews the right to defend themselves instead, shows resourceful problem-solving working within real legal constraints rather than simply wishing them away. This chapter’s celebration throughout the provinces demonstrates how quickly despair can turn to genuine joy when deliverance finally, decisively arrives.
