The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Armor” it comes from the Greek Word “panoplia” which means “full armor.”
Paul closes his letter describing a spiritual battle, and the equipment needed to actually stand firm in it. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ephesians 6.
Paul instructs children to obey their parents in the Lord, honoring father and mother, “which is the first commandment with promise,” and instructs fathers not to provoke their children to wrath, but to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. He addresses servants and masters similarly, urging genuine, wholehearted service as unto the Lord rather than merely to please people, and reminding masters to treat their servants fairly, knowing that both have the same Master in heaven who shows no favoritism.
Paul closes with his most famous passage, urging believers to “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might,” putting on “the whole armour,” “panoplia” in Greek, “of God,” so they can stand against the wiles of the devil, since the real struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places. He instructs them to take up this full armor so they can withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Paul describes each piece of this armor in vivid detail, the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the wicked one, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, watching with perseverance for all saints. He asks for prayer for himself as well, that he might speak boldly the mystery of the gospel, “for which I am an ambassador in bonds,” and closes sending Tychicus to inform them of his circumstances, with a final blessing of peace, love, faith, and grace to all who love the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul’s armor of God isn’t primarily offensive weaponry for attacking, but protective equipment for standing firm against real spiritual opposition. Truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and God’s word, worn deliberately and consistently, remain exactly what’s needed to withstand pressure that ordinary human strength alone was never designed to endure.
