EPHESIANS 5 ‐ “Walk in Love”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Light” it comes from the Greek Word “phos” which means “light.”

Paul calls believers to imitate God directly, then addresses the relationship between husbands and wives. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Ephesians 5.

Paul urges believers to “be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” He warns against fornication, uncleanness, covetousness, filthy conversation, and foolish talking, none of which are fitting for saints, urging them instead toward thanksgiving, since no immoral, impure, or covetous person has inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

Paul instructs believers to walk as “children of light,” “phos” in Greek, since they were formerly darkness but are now light in the Lord, proving what is acceptable to the Lord and having no fellowship with darkness’s unfruitful works, but rather exposing them. He urges them to walk carefully, redeeming the time, understanding what the Lord’s will is, and being filled with the Spirit rather than drunk with wine, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in their hearts to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things.

Paul addresses marriage relationships, instructing wives to submit to their own husbands as unto the Lord, and husbands to love their wives “even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it,” nourishing and cherishing them as their own bodies, since a man and his wife become one flesh. Paul explains this relationship reflects a great mystery concerning Christ and the church, closing with a summary that each husband should love his wife as himself, and the wife should reverence her husband.

Paul roots the entire marriage relationship not in cultural convention, but in the far deeper pattern of Christ’s own sacrificial love for the church. Whatever specific instructions apply to husbands and wives, they flow directly out of this same foundational call to imitate God, walking in genuine, self-giving love toward one another.
