The Preacher returns and considers all the oppressions done under the sun, beholding the tears of those who are oppressed, and they having no comforter, on the side of their oppressors being power, but they having no comforter, praising the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive, better still being he who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work done under the sun.
The Preacher considers all “travail,” “amal” in Hebrew, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbor, this also being vanity and vexation of spirit, the fool folding his hands together, and eating his own flesh, better being a handful with quietness, than both hands full with travail and vexation of spirit, describing one who is alone, having no second, yet there being no end of all his labor, neither is his eye satisfied with riches, for whom does he labor, and bereave his soul of good.
The Preacher declares famously, “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up,” and if two lie together, they have heat, but how can one be warm alone, and if one prevails against him, two shall withstand him, a threefold cord not being quickly broken, closing with observations about the fleeting nature of popularity, comparing a poor and wise child favorably against an old and foolish king who will no longer be admonished.
The Preacher’s honest acknowledgment of genuine oppression and injustice, without offering quick or easy resolution, models honest engagement with life’s real difficulties rather than premature, comfortable dismissal. His beloved observation, two are better than one, since they can help each other up when one falls, offers timeless, practical wisdom about the genuine value of companionship and mutual support throughout life’s inevitable challenges.
