The Preacher declares dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savor, so does a little “folly,” “sikluth” in Hebrew, outweigh him who is in reputation for wisdom and honor, a wise man’s heart being at his right hand, but a fool’s heart at his left, and even when the fool walks by the way, his wisdom fails him, and he says to everyone that he is a fool.
The Preacher observes that if the spirit of the ruler rises up against them, they should not leave their place, since yielding pacifies great offenses, describing an evil he has seen under the sun, an error which proceeds from the ruler, folly being set in great dignity, and the rich sitting in low place, servants riding upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth, warning that whoever digs a pit shall fall into it, and whoever breaks a hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
The Preacher continues with practical observations, whoever removes stones shall be hurt by them, and he who splits wood shall be endangered by it, if the iron is blunt, and he does not whet the edge, then he must use more strength, but wisdom is profitable to direct, a fool’s lips entering into contention, and his mouth calling for strokes, warning against cursing the king, even in one’s thought, nor cursing the rich in one’s bedchamber, since a bird of the air shall carry the voice, closing with observations about the folly of laziness, feasting made for laughter, and money answering all things, though wisdom remains genuinely necessary for wise, discerning living.
The Preacher’s memorable image, dead flies spoiling an entire batch of precious ointment, illustrates how disproportionately a small amount of folly can undermine an otherwise substantial reputation for wisdom and good sense. His practical wisdom about honing a blunt axe rather than merely applying more brute strength reminds readers that genuine skill and preparation often accomplish more efficiently what raw effort alone struggles to achieve.
