The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Inheritance” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nachalah” which means “inheritance, possession.”
Moses recounts the final military victory before Israel reaches the edge of the promised land itself. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Deuteronomy 3.
Moses recalls Israel’s decisive victory over Og, king of Bashan, described as the last of the remaining giants, whose massive iron bedstead, over thirteen feet long, remained on display as evidence of his unusual size. God delivers Og and his entire kingdom into Israel’s hands, and they take sixty cities, completely destroying them as they had done to Sihon before.
Moses recounts distributing this newly conquered land, along with Sihon’s earlier territory, to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh, since it suited their large flocks and herds well, on the condition that their armed men still cross the Jordan and fight alongside their brothers until the rest of the land is fully conquered. Moses also recalls commissioning Joshua directly, encouraging him not to fear these upcoming battles, since “the LORD your God he shall fight for you.”
Moses then recalls his own personal plea to God, begging to be allowed to cross over and see the good land himself. God’s response is firm, telling Moses to speak no more of this matter, though He graciously allows Moses to view the entire land from the top of Pisgah. God instructs Moses instead to commission and strengthen Joshua, “for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.” The Hebrew word for inheritance here is “nachalah.”
Even after being told plainly he could not enter the land, Moses still pleaded once more with genuine hope. God’s answer remained firm, yet He still gave Moses a full view of everything from the mountaintop. Sometimes God’s compassion shows up not by changing a hard answer, but by still letting us see clearly what we long for.
