The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Curse” it comes from the Hebrew Word “qelalah” which means “curse.”
Moses lays out, in exhaustive detail, exactly what obedience and disobedience will each bring upon this nation. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Deuteronomy 28.
Moses promises sweeping blessing if Israel diligently obeys the voice of the Lord, blessed in the city and in the field, in their children, crops, and livestock, blessed coming in and going out, with enemies defeated before them, and the Lord establishing them as “an holy people unto himself,” so that all the peoples of the earth would see that they are called by the name of the Lord and fear them.
Moses then turns to an extensive, sobering list of curses that will follow disobedience, “qelalah” in Hebrew, cursed in the city and field, in their basket and store, in their children and crops, plagued with disease, drought, defeat by enemies, and unrelenting hardship in every part of daily life. The descriptions grow increasingly severe and detailed, madness, blindness, oppression, crop failure, and ultimately foreign invasion, siege, and exile from the very land God had given them, since “the LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known.”
Moses describes this coming exile in vivid, painful detail, scattered among all peoples, finding no rest, a trembling heart, and a life lived in constant fear and uncertainty, all stemming from Israel’s failure to serve the Lord “with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things,” even though He had provided so generously for them.
The blessings and curses in this chapter aren’t presented as arbitrary rewards and punishments, but as the natural, unfolding consequences of a relationship either honored or neglected. God laid out both paths with remarkable clarity, leaving Israel with no excuse for claiming they didn’t understand exactly what was at stake in their choice.
