DEUTERONOMY 27 ‐ “The Altar on Mount Ebal”

Bible Chapter Reviews

The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Curse” it comes from the Hebrew Word “arar” which means “to curse, to bind under a curse.”

Moses instructs Israel to build a monument the moment they cross into the promised land. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Deuteronomy 27.

Moses and the elders instruct Israel that on the day they cross the Jordan, they are to set up large stones, plaster them, and write all the words of this law upon them clearly, along with building an altar of uncut, unhewn stones on Mount Ebal, offering burnt offerings and peace offerings there, and rejoicing before the Lord. This monument would stand as a permanent, physical reminder of the covenant right at the entrance into their new home.

Moses instructs that six tribes stand on Mount Gerizim to pronounce blessing over the people, and six tribes stand on Mount Ebal to pronounce curses, “arar” in Hebrew, a dramatic, physical enactment of the choice laid before them. The Levites then recite a series of specific curses aloud, targeting secret idolatry, dishonoring parents, moving a neighbor’s landmark, leading the blind astray, perverting justice for the stranger, fatherless, or widow, various sexual sins, secret murder, taking a bribe to kill an innocent person, and finally, a comprehensive curse on anyone who does not confirm all the words of this law by doing them.

After each curse, the entire congregation responds with a unified “Amen,” a public, communal acknowledgment of these standards, binding the whole nation together in accountability to the same law, right at the very threshold of the land God had promised them for centuries.

Notice that nearly every curse in this list targets sins committed secretly, private idolatry, secretly moving a landmark, secret murder, things easily hidden from human eyes. This ceremony reminded Israel powerfully that nothing done in secret ever escapes God’s notice, even when no human witness happens to be watching.
