Moses instructs that once Israel possesses the land, they are to bring a basket of the firstfruits, “bikkurim” in Hebrew, of the land’s produce to the priest at the place God chooses, declaring openly, “I profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the country which the LORD sware unto our fathers for to give us.” The priest sets the basket before the altar, and the worshiper recites a remarkable summary of Israel’s entire story, beginning with “A Syrian ready to perish was my father,” recounting Jacob’s descent into Egypt, the bondage and affliction they suffered there, God’s hearing their cry, and His mighty deliverance bringing them “into this place, and hath given us this land, even a land that floweth with milk and honey.”
This worshiper then presents the firstfruits themselves as tangible evidence of that promise fulfilled, and worships before the Lord, rejoicing in all the good God has given, together with the Levite and the stranger living among them. Moses repeats the instruction for the third-year tithe, given to the Levite, stranger, fatherless, and widow, accompanied by another spoken declaration affirming that the giver has faithfully fulfilled all of God’s commands regarding this tithe.
The chapter closes with a mutual declaration between God and Israel. The people declare the Lord to be their God, promising to walk in His ways, keep His statutes, and obey His voice. In turn, Moses declares that the Lord has this day accepted Israel as His own “peculiar people,” promising to set them high above all nations, in praise, name, and honor, “and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken.”
The firstfruits confession required every Israelite, generation after generation, to speak their family’s entire redemption story out loud, from suffering in Egypt to standing in the promised land. Regularly retelling that story kept it personal and immediate, ensuring gratitude never faded into distant, secondhand memory.
