The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Entice” it comes from the Hebrew Word “cuth” which means “to entice, to incite.”

Moses warns Israel that if a prophet arises among them, or someone who dreams a dream, and gives a sign or wonder that actually comes true, but uses it to entice them, “cuth” in Hebrew, toward serving other gods, they must not listen to that prophet, “for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” The accuracy of a sign was never meant to override obedience to what God had already clearly revealed. Such a false prophet, having spoken rebellion against the Lord, is to be put to death.
Moses extends this same warning to the closest possible relationships, a brother, son, daughter, wife, or dear friend, who secretly entices someone toward idolatry, insisting there must be no pity, no concealment, and that the one enticed must actually be the first to strike them, followed by the whole community, precisely to purge this evil thoroughly from among them and cause all Israel to hear and fear, discouraging such wickedness in the future.
Moses gives similar instructions for an entire city discovered to have turned toward idolatry, requiring careful investigation, and if the report proves certainly true, the complete destruction of that city and everything in it, offered entirely to the Lord, never to be rebuilt as a heap forever. He explains that this severe response exists so that “the LORD may turn from the fierceness of his anger” and show Israel mercy, multiplying them as He swore to their fathers, as long as they keep all His commandments.
Moses’ warning that even accurate signs and wonders could come from a source leading Israel astray is a sobering reminder that impressive spiritual displays alone were never meant to be the final test of truth. Faithfulness to what God has already clearly revealed always outweighs the persuasive power of an unusual, even genuinely miraculous, experience.
