Moses recounts God instructing him to cut two new tablets of stone like the first, since God would rewrite the same words on them after the golden calf incident. He recalls building an ark of wood to carry them and placing the tablets safely inside, where they remained. He also briefly recounts Aaron’s death and Eleazar succeeding him as priest, along with the Lord separating the tribe of Levi to bear the ark, stand before the Lord, minister, and bless in His name, since the Lord Himself is their inheritance rather than a portion of land.
Moses then asks a piercing rhetorical question. “And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul.” He reminds them that though heaven itself belongs to God, He specifically set His love on their fathers and chose their descendants above all other peoples.
Moses urges Israel toward something beyond mere outward ritual. “Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.” The Hebrew word for circumcise is “mul.” He reminds them that God is not partial, and shows no favoritism, executing justice for the fatherless and widow, and loving the stranger, giving them food and clothing, instructing Israel to love the stranger too, “for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.” He closes urging them to love the Lord their God and keep His charge, since they have personally witnessed the great and terrible things He did for their fathers in Egypt and in the wilderness.
Moses’ call to circumcise the heart rather than merely perform outward ritual reveals something God cared about long before the New Testament makes this same point explicit. Genuine devotion was never meant to be a physical mark alone. It required an inward transformation that only comes through wholehearted love and surrender to God.
