Daniel describes understanding by books the number of years, according to the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem, so he sets his face to the Lord God, to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes, praying and making “confession,” “todah” in Hebrew, acknowledging, “O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces… we have sinned, we have done wickedly.” Daniel prays extensively, acknowledging that all Israel has transgressed His law, and the curse written in the law of Moses has been poured upon them, since they have sinned against Him, pleading, “O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem… O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations… for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies,” while he is speaking and praying, Gabriel touches him about the time of the evening oblation. Daniel receives a remarkable prophecy, that seventy weeks are determined upon his people and upon his holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy, describing precise timing from the going forth of the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem to Messiah the Prince, being seven weeks and threescore and two weeks, describing how after this Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself, closing with a description of the prince who shall come destroying the city and the sanctuary, this remarkable, precisely detailed prophecy offering one of Scripture’s most specific messianic timelines.
Daniel’s extended, honest prayer of national confession, acknowledging Israel’s genuine guilt while appealing entirely to God’s mercy rather than any claimed righteousness of their own, models genuine intercession that takes both sin and grace with equal seriousness.
