Daniel receives a vision of four terrifying beasts and the everlasting kingdom of the Son of Man. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Daniel 7.
Daniel describes seeing in a vision in the night four great beasts coming up from the sea, diverse from one another, the first being like a lion with eagle’s wings, the second like a bear, the third like a leopard with four wings and four heads, and the fourth being dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong, with great iron “teeth,” “shen” in Hebrew, devouring and breaking in pieces, having ten horns, and among them a little horn coming up, before which three of the first horns were plucked up, and in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things. Daniel describes a magnificent vision, the Ancient of Days sitting, His garment being white as snow, and the hair of His head like the pure wool, His throne being like the fiery flame, and its wheels as burning fire, a fiery stream issuing and coming forth from before Him, thousands of thousands ministering to Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand standing before Him, the judgment being set, and the books being opened, describing how the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame, the rest of the beasts having their dominion taken away, yet their lives being prolonged for a season and a time. Daniel describes, “I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed,” this remarkable vision explained to Daniel as concerning four kings who shall arise, but the saints of the Most High shall take the kingdom, and possess it forever, even forever and ever, closing with Daniel keeping the matter in his own heart, greatly troubled by this remarkable, cosmic vision.
Daniel’s vision of the Son of Man receiving everlasting dominion and glory offers one of the Old Testament’s clearest anticipations of Christ’s own future authority, a title Jesus Himself would frequently apply to His own identity and mission. This chapter’s promise that the saints of the Most High shall ultimately possess the kingdom forever offers genuine, comprehensive hope extending beyond any single earthly empire’s rise and eventual fall throughout the sweep of human history.
