Daniel records how in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, he dreamed dreams, and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep left him, so he called for the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and Chaldeans to show him his dreams, but demanding they tell him both the dream and its interpretation, or be cut in pieces, since if they cannot make known the dream, there is only one “decree,” “dath” in Hebrew, for them all, but if they can show it, they shall receive great gifts and honor. Daniel, along with his companions, being in danger of being destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon, desires mercy of the God of heaven concerning this secret, and the secret is revealed to Daniel in a night vision, so he blesses the God of heaven, declaring, “Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his… he revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him,” then going before the king, and telling him he can show the king the interpretation. Daniel describes the king’s dream, a great image, whose brightness was excellent, standing before him, its head being of fine gold, its breast and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of brass, its legs of iron, its feet part of iron and part of clay, a stone being cut out without hands, smiting the image, and breaking it in pieces, becoming a great mountain filling the whole earth, Daniel interpreting this as four successive kingdoms, Babylon being the head of gold, followed by an inferior kingdom, then a third kingdom of brass, then a fourth kingdom strong as iron, but divided, closing with the interpretation that in the days of these kings, the God of heaven shall set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, and it shall stand forever, Nebuchadnezzar falling upon his face and worshiping Daniel, acknowledging that Daniel’s God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets.
Daniel’s dependence on prayer rather than his own cleverness, seeking God’s revelation alongside his companions before ever approaching the king, models genuine humility in receiving credit for what remains ultimately God’s own gracious gift rather than personal achievement alone. This chapter’s remarkable vision of successive kingdoms, culminating in God’s own everlasting kingdom, offers a sweeping historical framework demonstrating that every earthly power ultimately remains subject to God’s greater, permanent sovereignty.
