Daniel describes how in the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed to him, and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long, and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision, describing how in those days he was mourning three full weeks, eating no pleasant “bread,” “lechem” in Hebrew, neither did flesh nor wine come into his mouth, neither did he anoint himself at all, until three whole weeks were fulfilled. Daniel describes lifting up his eyes, and looking, and behold, a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz, his body also being like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude, describing how the men who were with him did not see the vision, but a great quaking fell upon them, so they fled to hide themselves, and Daniel was left alone, seeing this great vision, and there remained no strength in him. Daniel describes hearing the voice of his words, and when he heard it, he fell into a deep sleep on his face, toward the ground, but a hand touches him, setting him upon his knees and upon the palms of his hands, the messenger explaining he is greatly beloved, urging him to understand the words spoken to him, and stand upright, for to him he is now sent, describing how he trembles, standing up, the messenger explaining that from the first day he set his heart to understand, and to chasten himself before God, his words were heard, and he has come for his words, but the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood him twenty-one days, until Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help him, closing with the messenger promising to return to fight with the prince of Persia, and then the prince of Grecia shall come, revealing that spiritual, unseen conflict genuinely accompanies the visible, historical events unfolding on earth.
Daniel’s three weeks of genuine mourning and fasting before receiving this magnificent vision demonstrates that authentic spiritual breakthrough sometimes requires extended, sustained seeking rather than immediate, effortless revelation. This chapter’s remarkable disclosure of unseen spiritual conflict, angelic beings contending behind the scenes of visible history, reveals that earthly political events genuinely connect to deeper, cosmic spiritual realities operating beyond ordinary human perception.
