The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Repenting” it comes from the Hebrew Word “nacham” which means “to repent, relent.”
Amos intercedes successfully twice before God shows him a plumbline of coming judgment. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Amos 7.
Amos describes God showing him a vision, He was forming grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth, and behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings, and when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then Amos said, “O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small,” the Lord “repenting,” “nacham” in Hebrew, of this, declaring it shall not be. Amos describes a second vision, the Lord God calling to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part, then Amos again interceding, and the Lord repenting of this also, then showing him a third vision, standing upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in His hand, asking Amos what he sees, Amos answering a plumbline, the Lord declaring He will set a plumbline in the midst of His people Israel, He will not again pass by them any more, the high places of Isaac being desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel being laid waste, and He will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. Amos describes Amaziah the priest of Bethel sending to Jeroboam king of Israel, accusing Amos of conspiracy in the midst of the house of Israel, urging him to flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there, but not again prophesy at Bethel, since it is the king’s chapel, and the king’s court, Amos responding that he was no prophet, neither a prophet’s son, but a herdsman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruit, but the Lord took him as he followed the flock, and told him to go, prophesy to His people Israel, delivering a specific, personal judgment against Amaziah himself, closing with the declaration that Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of their land, this dramatic confrontation demonstrating the genuine, personal cost Amos bore for his faithful, unwelcome prophetic ministry.
Amos’s successful intercession, twice moving God to relent from judgment through genuine, humble pleading, demonstrates that authentic prayer can genuinely influence outcomes even while ultimate judgment eventually still proves necessary. His honest testimony, that he was no professional prophet but simply a herdsman called by God, reveals that genuine calling can come to entirely ordinary people rather than only those with established religious credentials or training.
