Saul consents to Stephen’s death and begins a severe persecution against the church in Jerusalem, entering house after house, dragging off men and women to prison. Believers scattered throughout Judaea and Samaria go everywhere preaching the word, and Philip goes down to Samaria, preaching Christ, casting out unclean spirits, and healing the sick, bringing great joy to that city. A sorcerer named Simon, who had previously amazed the Samaritans with his magic, believes and is baptized, though his heart remains troubled, since he later tries to purchase the Holy Ghost’s power with money, provoking Peter’s sharp rebuke that his heart is not right before God.
An angel instructs Philip to travel toward Gaza, where he encounters an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, returning from worship in Jerusalem, reading aloud from Isaiah’s prophecy. The Spirit tells Philip to join the chariot, and when the eunuch admits he cannot understand the passage without guidance, Philip explains that it speaks of Jesus, beginning “at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.”
Coming to some water along the way, the eunuch asks what hinders him from being baptized, and Philip baptizes him right there. Immediately afterward, the Spirit catches Philip away, and the eunuch continues on his way rejoicing, while Philip finds himself at Azotus, preaching in all the cities along the way until he reaches Caesarea.
The very persecution meant to crush the early church instead scattered believers exactly where the gospel needed to go next, into Samaria and beyond. Philip’s willingness to leave a thriving ministry in Samaria for a single conversation with one traveler on a desert road shows how much value God placed on reaching even one seeking heart.
