A married couple’s lie to the church has consequences far more severe than they ever expected. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Acts 5.
Ananias and his wife Sapphira sell a piece of property, but secretly keep back part of the proceeds while claiming to give the full amount to the apostles. Peter confronts Ananias directly, asking why Satan has filled his heart “to lie,” “pseudomai” in Greek, to the Holy Ghost, pointing out that the property and its proceeds were entirely his own to do with as he wished, but that he has lied not merely to men, but to God. Hearing this, Ananias falls down and dies, and great fear seizes everyone who hears about it. About three hours later, Sapphira enters, unaware of what happened to her husband. Peter asks her directly whether they sold the land for the amount stated, and she confirms the same lie. Peter responds that the feet of those who buried her husband are at the door, and they will carry her out as well, and she immediately falls down dead too. Great fear comes upon the whole church and everyone who hears of these events. Despite this sobering episode, many signs and wonders continue happening among the people through the apostles’ hands, and believers are increasingly added to the Lord, with even sick people being brought out into the streets so that Peter’s shadow might fall on them as he passes by. The high priest and Sadducees, filled with indignation, arrest the apostles again, but an angel of the Lord opens the prison doors by night and tells them to go stand in the temple and speak “all the words of this life.” Brought before the council again, Peter and the apostles declare, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Gamaliel, a respected Pharisee, wisely counsels the council to leave the apostles alone, reasoning that if this work is of men, it will come to nothing, but if it is of God, they cannot overthrow it, and might even find themselves fighting against God.
Ananias and Sapphira’s sin wasn’t withholding money, which Peter explicitly says was entirely their choice to make. It was pretending to give everything while secretly holding back, choosing appearance over honesty before God. This sobering account shows just how seriously genuine integrity mattered within this newly forming community.
