The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Restitution” it comes from the Greek Word “apokatastasis” which means “restoration.”
A man who has never walked in his life suddenly finds himself leaping and praising God at the temple gate. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Acts 3.
Peter and John go up to the temple to pray, where a man lame from birth is carried daily to beg at the gate called Beautiful. When he asks them for money, Peter responds, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.” Taking him by the right hand, Peter lifts him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones receive strength, and he walks, leaps, and enters the temple with them, “walking, and leaping, and praising God.”
The astonished crowd gathers around Peter and John in Solomon’s porch, and Peter uses the moment to preach, insisting that it is not through their own power or holiness that this man was healed, but through faith in the name of Jesus, whom they delivered up and denied, choosing a murderer to be released instead, and killing “the Prince of life; whom God hath raised from the dead.”
Peter acknowledges that they acted in ignorance, just as God had foretold through all His prophets that Christ should suffer, and calls them to repent and be converted, “that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord,” and that God will send Jesus Christ again, “whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things,” the Greek word for this restoration being “apokatastasis.” Peter reminds them that Moses himself foretold a prophet like him whom they must hear, and that they are children of the covenant God made with their fathers.
Peter refused to let the crowd credit him or John for this healing, insisting immediately that faith in Jesus’ name alone accomplished it. Even in the middle of a genuinely astonishing miracle, his instinct was to redirect all attention and credit away from himself and directly toward Christ.
