Paul sets sail for Rome, and the journey turns into a fight for survival against a violent storm. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Acts 27.
Paul, along with other prisoners, sets sail for Italy under the care of a centurion named Julius, who treats Paul kindly throughout the journey. As the voyage becomes increasingly dangerous with the season advancing, Paul warns the ship’s officers that continuing would bring great disaster, but the centurion, trusting the ship’s owner and pilot instead, presses forward. Soon after leaving port, a violent tempestuous wind called Euroclydon strikes the ship, driving it helplessly for days, with the crew eventually throwing cargo and even the ship’s equipment overboard, losing all hope of survival as neither sun nor stars appear for many days.
Standing before the exhausted, terrified crew, Paul urges them, “be of good cheer,” “tharseo” in Greek, explaining that an angel of God stood by him the previous night, promising that though the ship will be lost, not a single life among them will perish, and that Paul himself must stand before Caesar exactly as promised. He encourages them to eat, since it is needed for their survival, and after giving thanks openly to God before them all, eats himself, encouraging the rest of the 276 people aboard to do the same.
As dawn approaches, they spot land and attempt to run the ship aground, but it strikes a sandbar, and the vessel begins breaking apart under the force of the waves. Soldiers initially want to kill the prisoners to prevent their escape, but the centurion, wanting to save Paul, prevents this, commanding everyone who can swim to jump overboard first, and the rest to follow on broken pieces of the ship. Remarkably, exactly as promised, every single person makes it safely to land.
In the middle of a storm so severe that even experienced sailors lost all hope, Paul remained the calm, steady voice reminding everyone of God’s specific promise. His confidence wasn’t based on the circumstances looking any better. It was based entirely on trusting a promise God had already spoken, regardless of how the storm still raged around him.
