Before the council, Paul declares he has lived with a good conscience, “syneidesis” in Greek, before God, prompting the high priest Ananias to order him struck on the mouth. Paul responds sharply, then, learning it was the high priest, apologizes, quoting Scripture against speaking evil of a ruler. Recognizing the council is divided between Pharisees and Sadducees, Paul cleverly declares himself a Pharisee on trial specifically for his hope in the resurrection, a statement that immediately splits the assembly into fierce dispute, since Sadducees deny resurrection, angels, and spirits entirely, while Pharisees affirm all three.
The dissension grows so violent that the chief captain, fearing Paul will be torn apart, orders soldiers to rescue him and bring him back into the barracks. That night, the Lord stands by Paul, encouraging him, “Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.” The next morning, more than forty Jews bind themselves under a serious oath neither to eat nor drink until they have killed Paul, and conspire with the chief priests to request his return before the council under the pretense of further examination.
Paul’s nephew learns of this plot and reports it to Paul and then to the chief captain, who takes the threat seriously and arranges an enormous armed escort, nearly five hundred soldiers, to transport Paul safely by night to Felix, the governor in Caesarea, along with a formal letter explaining the situation and the accusations against him.
The chief captain’s overwhelming, careful response to protect a single prisoner from an assassination plot reveals how seriously Roman law took the safety of even a controversial figure like Paul. Behind the scenes, through a nephew’s report and a commander’s precaution, God’s promise that Paul would testify in Rome was quietly being protected and fulfilled.
