An earthquake shakes a prison at midnight, and a jailer asks the most important question of his life. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is Acts 16.
In Lystra, Paul meets Timothy, a young disciple well spoken of by the believers there, and takes him along on his journey, circumcising him first out of consideration for the Jews in that region. Forbidden by the Holy Ghost from preaching in Asia, Paul receives a vision in the night of a man from Macedonia pleading, “Come over into Macedonia, and help us,” a call, “kaleo” in Greek, they immediately conclude God has given them, and they set sail for Philippi.
There, by a river, they meet Lydia, a seller of purple, “whose heart the Lord opened,” and she and her household are baptized. Later, a servant girl possessed by a spirit of divination follows them, crying out repeatedly, until Paul, grieved, casts the spirit out of her, angering her masters who profited from her fortune-telling. They drag Paul and Silas before the magistrates, who have them beaten and thrown into prison, their feet fastened securely in stocks.
At midnight, Paul and Silas pray and sing praises to God while the other prisoners listen, when suddenly a great earthquake shakes the prison’s very foundations, throwing open every door and loosing everyone’s chains. The jailer, assuming the prisoners have escaped and about to kill himself, is stopped by Paul’s reassurance that everyone remains present. Trembling, he asks, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Paul answers, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” The jailer washes their wounds, and he and his entire household are baptized that very night, rejoicing greatly, having believed in God.
Paul and Silas chose to sing praises to God from inside a dark prison cell after being unjustly beaten, and that unlikely worship became the very thing that opened the door, both literally and spiritually, for an entire household’s salvation. Sometimes the darkest, most painful circumstances become exactly where God’s power breaks through most dramatically.
