Certain men come down from Judaea teaching that Gentile believers must be circumcised according to the law of Moses in order to be saved, causing significant dissension and debate with Paul and Barnabas. The church sends them to Jerusalem to bring this question before the apostles and elders. After much disputing, Peter stands up and reminds everyone that God already chose to have the Gentiles hear the gospel through him, purifying their hearts by faith just as He did for the Jewish believers, asking why they should now put a yoke, “zygos” in Greek, on Gentile disciples that neither they nor their fathers were able to bear. Barnabas and Paul then describe the miracles and wonders God worked among the Gentiles through them, and James, the brother of Jesus, concludes the discussion, citing the prophets’ testimony that God always intended to include the Gentiles among His people. James proposes that Gentile believers not be troubled with the full requirements of the law, but simply asked to abstain from idol pollution, sexual immorality, and food involving blood, out of consideration for Jewish sensibilities. The apostles and elders, with the whole church, agree, and send Judas and Silas along with Paul and Barnabas back to Antioch with a formal letter explaining this decision, bringing great joy and encouragement to the believers there. After some time, Paul suggests to Barnabas that they revisit the churches they previously established, but a sharp disagreement arises over whether to bring John Mark along again, since he had previously departed from them partway through an earlier journey. Unable to resolve this, Paul and Barnabas separate, Barnabas taking Mark to Cyprus, while Paul chooses Silas and departs through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
The Jerusalem council resolved a potentially church-splitting dispute not through raw authority, but through careful listening, shared testimony, and honest discussion together. Even Paul and Barnabas’s own painful, personal disagreement afterward shows that unity in the early church wasn’t perfect, but the mission itself kept moving forward regardless.
