Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, writes to Timothy, his dearly beloved son, greatly desiring to see him, being mindful of his tears, filled with joy remembering the unfeigned “faith,” “pistis” in Greek, that dwelt first in his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, and is persuaded dwells in Timothy also.
Paul urges Timothy to stir up the gift of God within him, given through the laying on of Paul’s hands, since God has not given believers a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. He urges Timothy not to be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord, nor of Paul his prisoner, but to be a partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God, who saved and called believers with a holy calling, not according to their works, but according to His own purpose and grace given in Christ Jesus before the world began.
Paul explains this grace is now made manifest through the appearing of the Savior Jesus Christ, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, for which Paul was appointed a preacher, apostle, and teacher of the Gentiles, suffering these things yet not ashamed, since he knows whom he has believed and is persuaded that He is able to keep what Paul has committed to Him against that day. Paul urges Timothy to hold fast the form of sound words he heard from him, in faith and love in Christ Jesus, keeping that good thing committed to him by the Holy Ghost, and mentions that Onesiphorus refreshed him often and was not ashamed of his chains, seeking him out diligently in Rome until he found him.
Paul’s reminder that God gives a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind rather than fear offers timeless encouragement to anyone tempted toward timidity in living out their faith openly. His confident declaration, I know whom I have believed, models the kind of settled, personal trust that can sustain genuine courage even while facing real suffering and imprisonment.
