Paul addresses a concerning rumor circulating among the Thessalonians, whether by spirit, word, or letter claiming to be from him, that the day of Christ had already come, urging them not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled by this, and not to let anyone deceive them by any means. He explains that day will not come unless a “falling away,” “apostasia” in Greek, comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above everything called God or worshiped, even sitting in the temple of God, showing himself as God.
Paul reminds them he told them these things while still with them, and that they know what currently restrains this figure from being revealed in his own proper time, since the mystery of iniquity already works, though only until the one restraining is taken out of the way. Then this lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming, his own arrival accompanied by Satan’s power, with all lying wonders and deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved.
Paul explains that because of this rejection of truth, God sends them strong delusion so they would believe a lie, that all might be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. Paul contrasts this with the Thessalonians themselves, giving thanks that God chose them from the beginning to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth, urging them to stand fast and hold the traditions they were taught, whether by word or by Paul’s own letter, closing with a prayer that the Lord would comfort their hearts and establish them in every good word and work.
Paul’s careful correction of a false rumor about the day of the Lord shows how quickly confusion can spread even within a genuinely faithful church, and how important it is for leaders to address such misunderstandings directly and clearly. His emphasis on standing fast in what they were originally taught reminds believers that established truth remains the anchor against every new claim, however urgent it sounds.
