David asks whether anyone remains of Saul’s household to whom he might show “kindness,” “chesed” in Hebrew, for Jonathan’s sake, and learns of Ziba, a former servant of Saul’s household. Ziba reveals that Jonathan has a surviving son, Mephibosheth, lame in both feet, living in relative obscurity at Lodebar.
David sends for Mephibosheth, who comes and falls on his face before the king, fearfully expecting punishment or execution as a potential rival, given the customary practice of eliminating a predecessor’s remaining heirs. Instead, David reassures him not to fear, explaining he intends to show him kindness for his father Jonathan’s sake, restoring to him all the land that belonged to Saul, and inviting him to eat continually at the king’s own table like one of David’s own sons.
Mephibosheth, overwhelmed, humbly asks what he has done to deserve such honor, comparing himself to a dead dog. David instructs Ziba and his household to work Saul’s restored land on Mephibosheth’s behalf, bringing him the produce, while Mephibosheth himself dwells in Jerusalem and eats regularly at the king’s table, “as one of the king’s sons,” despite being lame in both feet.
David’s kindness to Mephibosheth, actively searching him out rather than waiting to be asked, and restoring far more than mere survival, reflects the covenant loyalty he had promised Jonathan decades earlier. This story offers a beautiful picture of grace, someone with every reason to expect rejection instead welcomed permanently to the king’s own table.
