David’s joyful plan to bring the ark home turns tragic in an instant. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Samuel 6.
David gathers thirty thousand chosen men to bring the ark of God from Kirjathjearim to Jerusalem, setting it on a new cart, exactly as the Philistines had done years earlier rather than following God’s specific instructions for the Levites to carry it by hand. As the cart reaches a threshingfloor, the oxen stumble, and Uzzah reaches out to steady the ark, but God strikes him dead instantly for this irreverent touch, and David, angry and afraid, halts the procession, leaving the ark at the house of Obededom for three months instead.
Seeing that the Lord blesses Obededom’s household because of the ark’s presence there, David tries again, this time correctly, and when the bearers have gone six paces safely, he sacrifices oxen and fatlings in celebration. David dances before the Lord with all his might, wearing a linen ephod, leaping and “dancing,” “karar” in Hebrew, joyfully as the ark comes into Jerusalem with shouting and trumpet sound.
Michal, Saul’s daughter, watches from a window and despises David in her heart for dancing so undignified in front of the servant girls. David sets the ark in its place, offers sacrifices, blesses the people, and distributes food to everyone present before returning home to bless his own household. When Michal confronts him sarcastically about his behavior, David responds firmly that he was dancing before the Lord who chose him over her own father’s house, and that he will become even more undignified than this, gladly honored by the very servant girls she mentioned, and Michal remains childless for the rest of her life.
David’s uninhibited dancing before the Lord, and his refusal to be shamed out of it by Michal’s contempt, shows genuine, unguarded worship unconcerned with appearing dignified. Sometimes real devotion looks undignified to onlookers more concerned with appearances than with wholehearted celebration of what God has actually done.
