David’s final recorded words open with striking humility mixed with confidence in his calling. “David the son of Jesse said… the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.” He describes the blessing of righteous rule, like morning light after rain making grass spring from the earth, and contrasts this with the fate of the wicked and worthless, who will be thrust away like thorns, only handled with iron and the shaft of a spear, and utterly burned.
The chapter then honors David’s “mighty men,” beginning with an extraordinary account of three who broke through Philistine lines just to bring David water from the well at Bethlehem during his exile, water David refused to drink himself, pouring it out to the Lord instead, since it represented these men’s blood risked for his sake. Individual exploits are recorded in detail, Adino killing eight hundred men at once, Eleazar fighting until his hand grew weary and stuck to his sword, and Shammah defending a field of lentils single-handedly against the Philistines.
The chapter closes with an extensive, honored list of David’s thirty-seven mighty men, including Benaiah, known for killing a lion in a pit on a snowy day and defeating an Egyptian giant with the giant’s own spear, and finally, poignantly, including “Uriah the Hittite” among these honored names, a quiet, lasting reminder of the man David wronged so grievously years earlier.
The deliberate inclusion of Uriah’s name among David’s most honored warriors, listed without comment or explanation, serves as a quiet, permanent reminder of David’s greatest personal failure, even within a chapter otherwise celebrating his legacy and loyal supporters. Scripture refuses to let that particular wrong simply be forgotten or erased from the record.
