David sings this song to the Lord on the day he was delivered from all his enemies, including Saul, praising God with rich, layered imagery. “The LORD is my rock,” “tsur” in Hebrew, “and my fortress, and my deliverer… my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour.” He describes crying out to God in distress, and how the Lord heard his voice from His temple, causing the earth itself to shake and tremble in response to His anger on David’s behalf.
David describes God’s dramatic rescue in vivid, poetic language, bowing the heavens, riding upon a cherub, flying on the wings of the wind, sending arrows and lightning to scatter his enemies, drawing him out of deep waters, and delivering him from his strong enemy who was too powerful for him alone. He explains that God rewarded him according to his righteousness, keeping His ways and not wickedly departing from his God, remaining faithful and upright before Him.
David praises God’s character extensively, merciful, upright, pure, and yet showing Himself unyielding toward the crooked, saving the afflicted while bringing down the haughty. He credits God directly with his military success, teaching his hands to war, girding him with strength, and giving him the necks of his enemies, declaring that God has delivered him from strife and made him head over nations he never even knew. The song closes with a triumphant declaration of God’s covenant faithfulness, showing mercy to His anointed, to David and his descendants, forevermore.
This extended song, essentially a lifetime retrospective of God’s faithfulness through decades of danger and warfare, shows David consistently crediting every victory to God rather than his own skill or strength. Looking back honestly over an entire life’s journey, David saw a consistent thread of divine rescue running through every difficult season he had survived.
