David inquires of the Lord about whether he should go up to Judah, and receives clear direction to go to Hebron, where the men of Judah anoint him king over their tribe. David sends word commending the men of Jabeshgilead for their honorable burial of Saul, promising to show them the same kindness in return.
Meanwhile, Abner, Saul’s military commander, takes Saul’s surviving son Ishbosheth and makes him king over the rest of Israel, setting the stage for prolonged “war,” “milchamah” in Hebrew, between the house of Saul and the house of David. Abner’s men and Joab’s men, David’s commander, meet at the pool of Gibeon, and after a deadly contest between twelve chosen men from each side, full battle breaks out, with David’s forces ultimately prevailing.
During the retreat, Asahel, Joab’s brother, pursues Abner relentlessly, refusing to turn aside despite repeated warnings, until Abner reluctantly kills him in self-defense with the back end of his spear. This death sparks a lasting blood feud, as Joab and Abishai continue pursuing Abner until Abner calls for a ceasefire, reasoning that continued fighting between brothers will only bring bitterness. Joab agrees to stop, and both sides return home, though the text notes ominously that the war between the two houses continues for a long time, with David growing steadily stronger while Saul’s house grows weaker.
This chapter shows the painful cost of a divided kingdom, brothers fighting brothers, personal grudges escalating into lasting feuds. Asahel’s death, born from stubborn refusal to heed clear warning, becomes the spark for a conflict that will shape the rest of this book, a sobering reminder of how quickly personal loss can fuel prolonged division.
