Ahithophel advises Absalom to let him pursue David immediately with twelve thousand men while he is weary and weak-handed, striking only the king himself and sparing everyone else, bringing all the people back peacefully once David alone is dead. This “counsel,” “etsah” in Hebrew, pleases Absalom and the elders greatly, seeming both swift and decisive.
But Absalom also calls for Hushai, David’s secret agent, to hear his opinion as well. Hushai skillfully argues against Ahithophel’s plan, reminding Absalom that David and his men are mighty, experienced warriors, likely hiding already in ambush, and that any early setback could shatter the confidence of Absalom’s newly gathered forces. Hushai instead advises patience, gathering all Israel together like sand on the seashore before Absalom personally leads an overwhelming force against David, ensuring complete victory without risk.
Absalom and the men of Israel choose Hushai’s counsel over Ahithophel’s, “for the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.” Hushai secretly warns Zadok and Abiathar to get word to David urgently, and through a clever relay involving a well and a woman hiding the messengers, the warning reaches David safely, allowing him and his people to cross the Jordan before Absalom can act. Seeing his counsel rejected, Ahithophel, recognizing the rebellion is now doomed, goes home, puts his affairs in order, and hangs himself.
This entire chapter shows God’s providence working quietly behind the scenes, using Hushai’s carefully reasoned but ultimately God-orchestrated persuasion to override what was, strategically speaking, genuinely superior military advice. Sometimes God’s protection comes not through miraculous intervention, but through ordinary human wisdom placed at exactly the right moment.
